Five Hours Apart
A short story in two tellings and an interlude
Dallas · the last week of October
Say it's a Tuesday in the last week of October, the odd week, the week London is five hours ahead instead of six.
A man who tests machines for a living is asked to collect a stranger from the airport: a colleague from the London office whose flight is late. By Friday night she is flying home, and four levels under the street, in the smallest room the company rents, something he built has been watching the sky the whole time.
Five Hours Apart is the week. A wordless interlude follows. Then Fall Back asks what happens if the flight doesn't go, and the clocks go back an hour, and there's a weekend nobody planned.
